Throughout the years, YPMC has received many awards, including Yamaha's prestigious V.I.P. dealer status, for its reputation as a leader in customer service and satisfaction. As a result of this, several of the premiere manufacturers in the piano industry have sought out YPMC to represent them.
Nearly 50 years later you will find YPMC not only the home of Yamaha acoustic, Disklavier, Clavinova, Modus, and AvantGrand pianos, but also the home of Bosendorfer, Wm. Knabe, Piano Disc, and the largest selection of nearly new and vintage Steinway & Sons pianos.
A relatively unknown Japanese piano manufacturer called Yamaha began doing business in the US by founding Yamaha International Corporation in downtown Los Angeles in June 1960. Yamaha started with an unlikely combination of pianos and motorcycles. Their mission was to introduce American musicians and piano dealers to the Yamaha brand. Yamaha Peninsula Music Center (YPMC) was the first dealer Yamaha appointed, and is the only dealer in the US that bares the Yamaha name.
Excited about the opportunity to represent such impressive pianos, the dealer was faced with the daunting task of getting their quality and name known. He decided to rent a van and take some Yamaha uprights to well known teachers in the area. He also placed a Yamaha grand in his church and a few other churches in San Jose. The response to the exquisite pianos was overwhelming. Teachers, musicians, and students alike were amazed at the superior touch and tone of these pianos. Soon the word spread throughout the musical community. By putting Yamaha in the store name, the owner made it easy for everyone to find this new manufacturer that was winning over the players and music venues throughout the Bay area. Within just a few years YPMC had become one of the largest single location piano stores in the Bay area. Continued support for local teachers, technicians, churches, schools, and institutions has helped YPMC retain that status to this day.
